you used to be the reason, for my smile.you still are.

over the sleepless night yesterday, i finished up this novel by Sayo Masuda, Autobiography of a Geisha. it kept me company all the way till 4am, i cant believe i could actually stay up just to read. if only i could garner that same energy to complete my revision.

this is a fantastic book, especially since i've taken a mod on geisha, i tend to understand things in the novel better. it is a bluntly honest piece of work, and the frankness of this novel is overwhelmingly striking. i admire the author for her ability to speak of her painful past, and pen them down. it shows the strength of ehr character in confronting her blotted life. unlike many of us who choose to be amnesiac when it comes to a sad history, she confronts them gallantly for all to see.

let me take out an excerpt from the novel,

"i want to rage against the miserable lives we lead, those of us who are borne into this world as blots of sin because of our parent's irresponsibility; i want to cry out that a life like mine must never be repeated. No matter how deep in desgrace, a human being is a human being after all. The human spirit wanders ceaselessly in search of light, and if it finds a light of some sort, it strives somehow to get near it, struggling, writhing in anguish. Yet even as it writhes in anguish, it is drowned before it reaches the light. If you have the heart of a human being and you become the parent of a human being, then even if it exhausts every bit of your energy, until that child can walk alone, i want you to do your duty as a parent"

it's a wonderful book, and someday, should i by any chance get the opportunity to learn the Japanese language, i would want to read the original (the one im reading is the translated version)form of biography by the author.
